Bellevue yard to host composite decking clinic

The world of composite decking products can be pretty confusing these days. It seems there are more products available every year, increasing the difficulty of conveying all this information to your customer. Dunn Lumber wants to help you gain some valuable knowledge by hosting a decking clinic featuring four nationally recognized composite decking products. We have partnered with representatives from Trex, TimberTech, Monarch and Oasis brand products to put on two informational clinics on Wednesday, May 25th at our Bellevue store, located at 2350 140th Ave. NE. There will be two sessions: from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the morning; and from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon.

In addition to detailed information on these four product lines there will be discussions on appropriate fasteners and installation techniques as well as drawings for door prizes and miscellaneous gifts. Coffee, soft drinks and donuts will be available as well. We always have a good time at these events and the questions and comments that come from an audience of your peers are usually as valuable as the presenter’s information.

With the acquisition of our Normandy Park location in 2003 and now with our latest purchase of Olson Lumber at the 9300 block of Aurora Avenue, we have the opportunity to greatly expand our product offering to customers of Dunn Lumber Company. The Normandy Park store has served as our product “R&D” facility for the last couple years, and that effort has led us to the re-setting of other stores and adding to our in-store product offering. We are currently working on Kirkland and Bellevue, and will continue at other locations when these are wrapped up. Stop in and see the additional inventory that is available at these two locations.

Another major product line that we can now offer at Normandy Park and Olson Lumber is Canyon Creek cabinets. We now have a beautiful cabinet display at Normandy Park, and although our display is smaller at Olson Lumber, they more than make up for it with their expertise.

So You Need A Special Beam . . .

We’ve all been there. You need a solid wood timber for a job, and it has to be really high quality. The salesperson says they can “pick one out” of their regular stock, but you know that just won’t cut it for your customer. There will be too many knots, or if it looks good, you can guarantee it will dry out and check after is has been installed. You knew all these things, Dunn Lumber knew all these things, but the fact remains that neither of us knew Jack . . . (Olson that is).

Our recent acquisition of Olson Lumber brought us another convenient location with good people. We were able to convince Jack Olson to stay on for a few years so we could learn about and continue to offer the product lines that make Olson Lumber so special. One of Olson’s product lines is high-end Douglas Fir timbers. Jack has been buying and stocking two different types of these timbers: select structural and vertical grain clears. Below are some of the characteristics of each:

Select Structural

• Douglas Fir Select Structural, Free of Heart Center, Full Rough, Limited Sap, No Wane.
• Stocking sizes 4x14, 4x16, 4x18, 6x12, 6x14, 6x16, 8x12, 8x14, 8x16.
• Length structure from 12’-24’.
• Special sizes available on request. Jack has quoted material as large as 24x24-60’ long.

Vertical Grain Clears

• Douglas Fir B& Btr, Industrial Clears, West Coast Grading Rules #17 Paragraph # 151-b.
• Stocking thicknesses are 2”, 2 1/2”, 3” and 4”.
• Widths are random from 6” to 12”+.
• Lengths are generally 12’-24’ with some pieces in stock 34’ or longer.
• All pieces are rough full sawn, with the slope of grain not to exceed 1 in 8, and more typically between 1 in 10, to 1 in 12.

Olson Lumber treats all these timbers with the utmost of care. Each piece is double end sealed with wax. Each row has stickers at four feet on center to promote uniform drying, and they keep the product shielded from the sun to prevent excessive checking. These timbers can be used as they are, or sent out to be surfaced to a specific finished dimension. You now have a quality solution for all your solid timber needs. Thanks Jack!
