Milgard Window Installation Class

Proper installation of windows is essential to preserving the warranty and maximizing the life of the windows. Milgard recognizes and recommends the AAMA (American Architectural Manufactures Association) certified installation method.

AAMA was developed to improve the installation of fenestration products within the construction industry. The goal of AAMA is to eliminate avoidable problems and reduce the need for additional work due to callbacks. AAMA has several recommendations for installation depending on if you are working on a new construction project or if you are in the replacement retro fit business.

You are invited to attend an install class that will provide you with the knowledge you need to make sure the windows you install will be leak free.

There are a number of factors to consider before starting a retrofit project. Come to the installation class on December 8 at our Bellevue yard and learn how to install windows according to AAMA specifications. As an extra incentive we are offering 10% off your next Milgard purchase if you attend the class. This will be a great opportunity for you to get your questions answered directly from the manufacturer. You will also be able to enroll for a 2-day class at a later date that when completed will award AAMA certification. Space is limited, to secure your spot contact your local Dunn Lumber representative today! We look forward to seeing you there!

The AAMA approved steps to install for new construction are listed below. Feel free to use this as a guideline for upcoming projects.

Step 1: Inspect framing and verify proper opening size, level, square and plumb

Step 2: Place 1/4” continuous lath strip on windowsill (not installed on doorsills).

Step 3: Install flashing, extending 9” past the opening on both sides.

Step 4: Apply a 3/8” bead of caulk around the inside portion of the right, left and top nailing fin.

Step 5: Apply 3/8” bead of caulk on the windowsill flashing.

Step 6: Set window.

Step 7: Prior to nailing, ensure sill, jamb and t-bar (if applicable) are level and square.

Step 8: Nail or staple window flange.
Note: On windows greater than 2’6” place one nail above each t-bar or as necessary to prevent the head from bowing.

Step 9: Install Tyvek adhesive 9” flashing on the jambs, extending 8 1/2” past each side.
(Jamb Flashing =RO Vertical Height + (2 x Flashing Width) – 1”)

Step 10: Install Tyvek adhesive 9” flashing on the head of the window, extending 10” past each side.
(Head Flashing = RO Horizontal Width + (2 x Flashing Width)+2”)

Once completed, verify jamb and sill are level.

To register for the installation class, print out the coupon below, fill it in and drop it in the mail or send an email to jimc@dunnlum.com

Building an Outdoor Project? Try Simpson Strong-Tie ZMax

Pressure-treated wood may cause standard metal components to fail prematurely. Simpson Strong-Tie recommends it’s ZMax (G185) galvanized products with most types of treated wood as a minimum standard to help protect against corrosion. ZMax products are coated with a thicker layer of zinc than standard hangers. With over 100 different ZMax and/or Hot Dipped Galvanized products available for your projects, don’t let your imagination hold you back. For even greater protection, use Stainless Steel. If you are within one mile of saltwater, Stainless is the smart choice.

When installing ZMax or Hot-Dipped Galvanized connectors, use only hot dipped fasteners. The same goes with Stainless Steel connectors, use only Stainless Steel nails. For the latest information regarding corrosion, visit http://www.naturalselect.com/corrosionposition.pdf or www.strongtie.com/info

Finally - a deck screw that eliminates mushrooming!

The FastenMaster® TrapEase™ composite wood deck screw is specially designed to eliminate the “mushrooming” effect caused by standard deck screws in composite deck materials without predrilling. TrapEase’s unique threading system traps most loose material during installation and pushes it back into the board creating a clean, flush finish. The fastener comes in multiple colors and will color match your next composite decking project.

TrapEase’s corrosive resistant coating is specifically developed for long lasting composites and is guaranteed not to corrode in the new pressure treated lumber. The fastener has undergone thousands of hours of testing both in-house and at Michigan State University ensuring its integrity. FastenMaster is so confidant in the performance of the TrapEase, we’ve put our ACQ/CBA guarantee in writing and posted it on our website.

For more information please visit www.fastenmaster.com.

We’ve had a lot of positive feedback from our faxed receipt initiative and now we are expanding to email. Email eliminates the need for a dedicated fax machine and the periodic interruptions due to busy telephone lines and paper jams. Also, the crisp PDF formatted images need never be printed and can be organized easily in job folders. Adding emailed statements to the receipts brings us a step closer to the paperless office and insures you have the latest cost information.

Remembering Fred ‘Coach’ Hull’s 35 Years at Dunn Lumber

This past June the career of one of Dunn Lumber’s most outstanding team members came to a close when Fred “Coach” Hull retired after 35 years of dedicated service.

After graduating from high school in Boise, Idaho Fred served four years in the United States Navy and then, when job opportunities in Boise didn’t pan out, moved to the Seattle area with his wife, Gloria Ann.

He walked in to Dunn Lumber’s Shoreline yard on May 8th, 1969 and, after making a favorable first impression, was hired on the spot. The rest, as they say, is history. During his 35-years with us, Fred developed a loyal following of both homeowner and contractor customers by taking a genuine, concerned interest in the success of their building projects. His friendly, affable manner and very extensive product knowledge gave all who dealt with Fred a feeling of confidence that they were doing business with the “right guy”. From the smallest backyard project to the largest home remodel or commercial job Fred was able to deliver the right products that would assure a quality job at the right price. Customers came back time after time to do business with Fred because they soon learned that the rare problem that occurred would be quickly remedied and the job would come in on-time and on-budget.

While Fred was dedicated and very successful at work, he enjoyed many outside activities as well. A lover of sports, Fred closely followed the Mariners, Seahawks and Sonics. He coached and played softball in several local leagues where he became known as “Coach” (many who know Fred believe the character of the same name on the TV show “Cheers” was named after him). His won-loss record as a coach and individual accomplishments as a player were outstanding and have become legend at local team-sponsoring taverns.

When not playing or watching team sports Fred loved to “wet a line” in any type of fishing endeavor. Be it fresh water lakes or streams or salt water charter boats, Fred loved the action and usually brought home his limit. On one occasion, fishing for sturgeon on the Columbia River, Fred landed an eight-footer that ended up being chronicled in Sports Illustrated (we all get our fifteen minutes of fame, don’t we).

Now, of course, Fred’s life will move on to other things. He and Gloria Ann plan to move back to Idaho to be near family and friends and pursue a life of leisure. This will undoubtedly include, among other adventures, lots of fishing outings but also annual trips to Arizona to take in spring training baseball.
We will sorely miss Fred and wish him and Gloria the very best of health and happiness in the future. His leadership, dedication, loyalty and hard work over the years are and have been very much appreciated; it will be very difficult to fill his shoes.

Introducing 5-Minute Fence Stain

You wouldn’t think of building a fence without nails, so don’t forget to stain your new fence as well. Unstained wood quickly loses its natural color and within 8 months most of its natural beauty is gone. But now, using a new product called 5-Minute Fence Stain, you can stain 100 running feet of fence in just five minutes - you can literally stain your fence the same day you build it. Available in natural cedar, dark cedar and redwood colors.

Attach the one-quart spray bottle directly to a garden hose, turn the sprayer to the mix setting, and stain the fence the same way you’d apply weed killer or fertilizer. And cleanup is a breeze! When staining is finished, set the sprayer to the water setting and hose off any over-spray. There is no faster or easier product to protect and beautify a fence.

Hardware Selection Set to Expand

Dunn Lumber is famous for its large inventories of high-quality goods. Since 1995 we’ve tripled the number of items at most of our locations, from 5,000 to 15,000. Our new Normandy Park location now has 30,000 items, raising the bar yet again. Beginning this summer with Kirkland, we are vastly expanding plumbing, electrical, fasteners and miscellaneous hardware.

We want to keep focusing on your needs so you won’t have to waste half your day running from store to store. Please keep those product requests coming, either by comment card at the yards or by email - buyers@dunnlum.com. Remember, your products are our passion!

The Best Latex Foam Sealant Is Now Even Better

Introducing DAPtex Plus Window and Door Foam Sealant with CoVinyl-9000. This key ingredient is the result of over two years of work by the DAP technology center. New DAPtex Plus forms its own protective, tough outer coating for 10 times greater water resistance, 4 times the toughness, and 2 times the hardness of earlier versions of DAPtex. DAPtex Plus also offers the advantage of water clean-up.

DAPtex Plus has met AAMA 101 standards for air infiltration and water resistance using ASTM E283 and ASTM E547 and E331. The superior ability of DAPtex Plus to resist water and drafts makes it ideal for sealing the rough openings around windows and doors.
