Dunn Lumber is proud to be a stocking dealer of Weyerhaeuser Cedar One cedar products. Cedar One is Weyerhaeusers proprietary brand name for its line of high quality cedar products.
Weyerhaeusers CEDARONE brand products are manufactured from the finest Western Red Cedar available. Because CEDARONE materials are harvested from forest regions with similar growth characteristics, CEDARONE buyers are assured of uniform characteristics from this renowned softwood species. The manufacturing of this special resource is carefully undertaken in Weyerhaeuser manufacturing facilities to the exacting standards that are established for every CEDARONE product.
Western Red Cedar grows on the western edge of the coastal mountains from southern Alaska to northern California. The principal supplying region is the coastal forest region of British Columbia. CEDARONE forestry practices are guided by the internationally recognized sustainable forest management system elements of ISO 14001 as part of the CSA Z809 Canadian national standard. These high standards of sustainable forestry are audited by third party inspection agencies to insure compliance with the certification standards. Forest management plans control harvest levels, and require reforestation to enhance natural regeneration and insure regional biodiversity.
Western Red Cedar contains water soluble extractives that contribute to its color, durability and aroma. The presence of moisture on exterior surfaces can bring these extractives to the surface and leave a reddish brown stain after the water has evaporated. The stains can be removed with detergent and water when they are first on the surface however they can be more difficult to remove after exposure to the sun. When primers are required prior to the application of a solid color coating, an alkyd oil primer is recommended because of its superior ability to block out moisture. This will limit the potential for extractive stains to appear on the coated surface.Removal of mature extractive bleeding stains is accomplished with an oxalic acid solution. Oxalic acid is available at all Dunn Lumber locations.
Additional finishing and species characteristics of Weyerhaeusers Cedar One product line can be found at www.cedarone.com. Please feel free to stop by any of our locations and let our professionals assist you in planning your next project with Cedar One.

Alternatives to cedar siding are becoming increasingly popular. Dunn Lumber and Boise Cascade will soon be offering a new siding called HomePlateUnlike many other composite sidings on the market, HomePlate siding is made strictly from cleaned and reprocessed postcommercial, recycled wood materials (crates, pallets, etc.) and plastic materia ls, such as lumber wrap. Incidentally, Dunn Lumber recycles lumber wrap and other plastic wrap (over three tons so far this year) diverting it from landfills.
HomePlate contains no glue, silica, fiberglass, PVC, asbestos or formaldehyde. Another benefit is that HomePlate produces far less dust than wood, or fiber-cement sidings.
Currently, produced at a state-of-the-art plant in Elma, Washington, HomePlate will be in your local Dunn Lumber this summer. Well be proud to be a part of this effort to reduce waste while offering a usable product to the consumer made purely of recycled materials!

Sustainable Forests - A Winning Balance Between Conservation and Timber Production
Over the course of the last decade there has been a growing awareness by the general population about the potential impact of societys actions on the global environment. As consumers view the multitude of possible purchasing choices covering a broad range of items, efforts have been made to reassure those buyers that where possible their choice of products will not have an adverse effect on the planet we all call home.
Very few other industries have come under public scrutiny like the forest products business that operates in the northwest. Although many of today best forest practices have been developed around sound and scientific fact, environmental challenges to our timber harvesting methods are a continual event where in many cases the entire challenge is based on emotionalism and misinformation. Even though northwest land and timber owners are required to manage their private property in accordance to some of the toughest state and federal forestry laws in the world, reassuring the public that their purchase of wood products today will not mean an end to the availability of those same wood products for future generations has been a challenge for forest products manufactures.
As the public has sought reassurance about the environmental impact of their choices in building products, it has given rise to the concept of certification where verification is provided about where products originate and whether or not that wood source is sustainable. Even though there are a variety of different global certification processes available today, the two most discussed in the northwest are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and SFI (Sustainable Forest Initiative). Although the two certification systems are similar in many of the governing principles, there are distinct differences in how the systems would apply to northwest timber ownership. The standards for FSC were originally written in 1991 by an environmental group to address deforestation in the hardwood forests of South America and cover a broad range of economic, social and environmental issues.Because the standards are difficult to adapt to other forestry regions of the world and due to the fact that the original principles are inconsistent with northwest timber management, landowners have been slow to embrace FSC certification.
As a response for the need to provide consumers with accurate information attesting to the sustainable of lumber products produced in the United States, the American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) embarked upon the task of developing a certification process that addressed consumer needs as well as practical timber management strategies. As such, the governing principles of Sustainable Forestry were developed and SFI certification became available to landowners around the world. The five key principles that govern whether or not a timberland base can be certified are as follows:
1. Sustainable Forestry
2. Responsible Practices
3. Forest Health and Productivity
4. Protecting Special Sites
5. Continual Improvement
With the introduction of the SFI principles, northwest timber owners have been able to evaluate whether or not past forestry practices have been sustainable and to identify what changes would be necessary to bring forestland management strategies into compliance with SFI requirements.
Today, many of the small and large timber owners in the northwest (and around the country) have made those changes and the amount of lumber produced under the SFI certification banner is growing daily. SFI certified products are available in all lumber categories allowing builders and consumers to be assured that when buying or using lumber products manufactured under the SFI principles, future generations will have the timberlands necessary to provide them with their forest products needs.

Our Founder: Albert Lewis Dunn
Albert Lewis Dunn was born in the small farming community of Eureka, Wisconsin, on March 4, 1869. He was the youngest of 8 children and his father had died a few months before he was born. When Albert was in his teens, he left home to work in a hardware store in exchange for room and board. He put himself through secondary school and a business college before moving to the booming lumber town of Rhinelander, WI. Here he met and married Mary Palmer and together they began a family while working as a bookkeeper in a sawmill.
In 1907 Albert founded Dunn Lumber Co. where he acted as a broker between local sawmills and retail lumber yards. At the turn of the century the vast forests of the Pacific Northwest began to be logged and the center of activity for lumber production was moving west. Albert realized that to continue to grow his business he needed to leave Wisconsin, so in 1910 he and his wife and four children (one additional child would be born in 1911) relocated to Seattle. Here he prospered representing lumber and shingle mills and in 1927 he and two of his sons, Charles and Ed, opened a retail lumberyard just east of what is now University Village Shopping Center.
Albert continued to be active in the business into his early 80s, consulting with his sons as they expanded the retail operations in the 1940s and 50s. By the time of his death in 1959, Dunn Lumber had grown into a multiple location business and using the principle of honesty and hard work set in place by its founder, would prosper and grow.

Dale Pugmire Moves On
After 32 years at Dunn Lumber in Shoreline, Dale Pugmire (center above with Jim Coshow and Rob Dunn) has left to move to Utah. Dale was the companys senior Yard Foreman and highly respected for running a large and complex operation.
Dale was newly married and unemployed in 1971 when he put on a suit and had his mother-in-law drop him off on Highway 99 in Shoreline. He walked south, stopping at each business to ask for work. As the day wore on it began to rain. By the time he got to Dunn Lumber his suit was soaked and he looked like hed slept under a bridge the night before. However there was something about Dale that struck the manager, Joe Zipp, as worth giving a try and he was hired on the spot.
Everyone at Dunn Lumber will miss Dale and his upbeat and can-do attitude. We wish he and his family all the best in their move.
