Clean and Stain your Deck all in One Day...

Whether you are staining the deck for the first time or maintaining an existing one, Dunn Lumber and Napier Environmental have got you covered with the One Day Deck system. The waterborne technology in Natural Deck Oil allows your crew to clean and stain the deck all in one day! This process eliminates the expense of waiting weeks for a new deck to season, or days to let the wood dry after you have cleaned it.

Built right here in the Northwest, products in the One Day Deck system are of premium quality, environmentally safe and water-based. The system is easy-to-use, simply visit the display at your favorite Dunn Lumber, choose the appropriate wood-restoration product for your project and pick a stain color. All of the products contain easy to follow directions including tips for application, and remember, all of the products are water-based so you will not need to buy any solvents for clean up.

The family of restoration products will restore the wood to its natural beauty, these products include: bleach-free Woodwash for weathered wood, Stripex for removing previous deck stain & sealers, Stripex-L for stripping deck finishes. Then use Stain Prep to “open-up” the pores and stabilize the Ph level of the wood to ensure even penetration of the Natural Deck Oil. Natural Deck Oil is available in wood toned colors that will enhance the natural beauty of the wood while protecting it from the damaging elements.

Builders: next time you’re in Dunn Lumber why not take a look at the environmentally friendly products we have to offer? Among these “green” items are: ARSENIC-FREE Natural Select preserved lumber, FORMALDEHYDE-FREE insulation from Johns Manville, SOLVENT-FREE and/or V.O.C. compliant adhesives from DAP (see article below.) Rhino Deck and Bang what?

Dunn Lumber has two wonderful hardwoods available for those with discriminating taste when it comes to decks: Rhino Deck and Bangkirai.

Rhino Deck – The most common names for this species of wood are IPE and Iron Wood. For a virtually indestructible deck that lasts a lifetime, Rhino Deck hardwood is a beautiful choice. With distinctive markings, smooth even texture and warm golden highlights, it creates the richness of teak without the maintenance!

Rhino Deck is five times harder than cedar and redwood. It naturally resists rotting, checking, cracking, splitting and decay. The unique strength and durability virtually eliminate the scarring and twisting that can occur with softer woods when exposed to everyday traffic and changing weather.

It has been rated as resistant to fire as steel and concrete, and has earned the highest durability rating (25 years plus) from the U.S. Agricultural Forest Products Research Lab. It is harvested using the most up-to-date, environmentally responsible sustained yield forestry techniques. If there is such a thing as a gorgeous rhino, it’s a deck built with Rhino Deck.

Bangkirai (pronounced BONG-kir-i) makes a beautiful and durable deck. It will outlast the structure it is attached to and could be used for the lifetime of another structure! And it’s available at Dunn Lumber.

Bangkirai originates in Indonesia. It is the most widely used heavy construction wood in Holland. Bangkirai timbers buried in the “mud” of Holland more than 100 years ago show no signs of decay or deterioration. In addition to the standard smooth surface, one side of Bangkirai has been reeded (grooved). Many people in Europe build their entire deck with the reeded surface up. A more common application is to use the reeded side up on steps for additional traction. Slippery and dangerous slick moss and other algae does not accumulate on Bangkirai surfaces.

Bangkirai is very hard – two to three times as hard as Oak. It is very durable. It weighs 69-70 pounds per cubic foot. Although carbide tipped cutting and drilling tools are recommended, Bangkirai cuts and drills easily. A one time high quality penetrating oil stain must be applied immediately after installation to stabilize the wood.

Applying a wax sealer to cut ends during construction is important. To retain the natural beauty of the wood, apply a high quality penetrating oil stain on an annual basis. Boards will weather to a natural gray color if additional oil coating is not applied.

Whether you lean toward Rhino Deck or Bangkirai, know that you can always lean on Dunn Lumber to provide you with the best hardwood decking available.

Seattle Lumber Distributor Recognized for Commitment to Rampathon

For a decade, Tom Dunn has been involved in a community service project that has aided countless handicapped and elderly individuals in the Puget Sound area of Washington State.Spearheaded by the Remodelors Council of the Master Builder’sAssociation, a collaborative effort culminates in the building of multiple handicap access ramps for individuals who would otherwise be unable to afford them. Among the volunteers who have made the Rampathon a success is the Dunn Lumber Company, whose donations of material, labor and money have made the annual event possible.

Tom Dunn with Susan Marvin, President of Marvin Windows and Doors

Each May, National Home Remodeling Month, volunteers take time out from their jobs to build these wheelchair ramps for low-income residents, who have trouble getting in and out of their homes. Of course, it’s not all in a day’s work. The Master Builder’s Association obtains designs, plans and permits. Handicap ramps can be elaborate constructions that cost thousands of dollars. Often, a porch or another type of landing must be erected to accommodate the angle of the slope, so that a person can maneuver a wheelchair to their door with enough space to open it.

Master Builder also meticulously orchestrates volunteer event coordinators, a qualified labor force and the scheduling and distribution of materials to each job site. Back when the project was in its infancy, it wasn’t unusual for low budgets to come short of meeting materials lists of already committed projects. Mysteriously, enough material would be delivered at the last minute, always quietly by Mr. Dunn.

In recognition of his commitment to Rampathon, Dunn was named a winner of the 2003 Yellow Rose Regional Recognition program, sponsored by Marvin Windows and Doors. The program recognizes building industry professionals in designated regions of the United States who pursue excellence in their work while promoting the advancement of their community.

Nineteen winners were honored at the 2003 Yellow Rose Regional Recognition Awards Ceremony at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas in January. Marvin Windows and Doors will donate $1,000 to each distinguished recipient’s charity. Dunn has chosen Master Builders Association. Through his incredible generosity, Dunn offers priceless gifts to the disabled in the community.

Mildew a Problem?

We have a year-round growing season for mildew in the northwest. Unless surfaces are cleaned regularly, mold, mildew and algae can grow on almost anything exposed to the elements.

Several years ago Mildew Sealer was developed for control of chronic mildew problems in the 100+ year old buildings along Fishermans’ Wharf in San Francisco where paint would develop mildew stains within a year.

The team from TWP/Amteco went to work and developed a 100% acrylic tie-coat primer loaded with mildicides and fungicides combined in a resin base that allows breathability while sealing in organic growth. It was applied to the previously painted surface then top-coated with a high quality acrylic latex paint.

Well, that was 1991 and there has been no re-occurrence of mildew since. Also, the paint is holding up exceptionally well. You see, most paint failures happen at the substrate, but when Mildew Sealer is applied as a primer, the topcoat has a much better surface to adhere to, which will add at least 50% more life to the paint job.

Mildew Sealer is available at Dunn Lumber. It can be used both indoors and out over bare wood, painted wood, sheetrock or plaster and dries clear. It is also used as a primer for composite siding products that need an extra “boost” of protection. When you’re out in the field, sometimes your best weapon is your knowledge of products that solve problems. Mildew Sealer is definitely a problem solver.
