Our Newest Location: Normandy Park
Last month Dunn Lumber grew to eleven locations with the purchase of Logan Lumber. Logan Lumber had been owned and operated by the Matson family since its founding in 1949 by Wayne Matson. In the past few years Steve Matson, President, and Mike Stromberg, General Manager, along with a dedicated group of employees continued the tradition of providing personal service to contractors and homeowners in the Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac and Burien areas. Many of the homes built in these areas were constructed with materials provided by Logan Lumber. (The Matson family will continue to operate the Logan location in Orting.)
In addition to the same lumber and building materials sold at other Dunn locations, our new Normandy Park yard carries a large selection of builders hardware, paint, plumbing and electrical supplies. Also different than other Dunn locations (with the exception of Bellevue) is a Millwork Shop capable of custom cutting lumber and moulding, as well as prehanging doors. The large, covered sheds at Normandy Park allow the bulk of lumber products to be located out of the weather.
We are pleased to report that most of Logans great sales staff remain to handle your most complicated building material questions. For those of you who have shopped at Logan, you can expect to see familiar faces that have helped you in the past and are aboard as part of the Dunn crew. So the next time youre in Normandy Park stop in for a cup of coffee and say hello to old friends or meet some new ones!

In our efforts to maintain a conscious positive attitude toward being green, you may have noticed a few changes around our stores. We are currently developing a more comprehensive program of recycling, re-using and reducing. Some of the items we are already recycling include shrink wrap, lumber wrap, sheet rock stickers (blocking between sheet rock units), cardboard, mixed paper, aluminum cans, plastic bottles and glass.
Were excited about our efforts and have many promising future plans. Please watch this section of The Board Report for updates and fun facts each month!

DRICON Reducing the Effects of Fire
When it comes to fire retardant treated wood (FRT), Dunn Lumber carries the best product available Dricon. It is an effective and economical material for reducing the effects of fire. Building code organizations and other construction-related agencies recognize Dricon FRT as an alternative to materials classified as noncombustible for a range of applications.
Introduced in 1981, Dricon FRT wood is a development of Arch Wood Protection intended for weather-protected applications. It has proven itself in countless structures of many different types, from neighborhood schools to suburban restaurants to condominiums to office buildings to a maintenance building in Antarctica. This treated wood contains a superior fire retardant chemical that remains stable in high temperature environments and does not increase the corrosivity of metal hardware in contact with the wood.
Dricon FRT wood provides greater design latitude for the architect, engineer and contractor, and removes many barriers associated with conventional noncombustible materials such as masonry and steel. The use of Dricon FRT wood can result in greater safety, reduced insurance rates, and easing of building code limitations.
How it works Passive Protection. An important feature of Dricon FRT wood is that it reacts automatically when exposed to fire. Dricon chemicals react with combustible gases and tars normally generated by untreated wood and converts them to carbon char and harmless carbon dioxide and water. Wood loses strength in a fire only at the rate at which its cross section is reduced. The surface char acts to insulate underlying wood and reduces the rate at which the cross sectional area is reduced. The carbon dioxide and water vapor dilute the combustible gases to help reduce flamespread.
Preservative protection is also provided. It renders the wood useless as a food source for termites and fungal decay, thereby avoiding damage caused by these organisms.
We acquire our Dricon FRT wood from a Washington wood preserving company, Exterior Wood. Their production is monitored by an independent inspection agency, verifying their internal quality control.
For every one thing you ever wanted to know about fire retardant treated wood try a visit to www.dricon.com. You can always count on Dunn to carry the very best of products including Dricon FRT!
